FAQ
✦How do you say Dav'Ris? Does it mean something?
Dav-ree, and nope, I just liked the sound of it.
✦Is this a D&D/Hobbit/WoW/DragonAge/Skyrim RP?
Nope. The world is original. These races are common throughout fantasy themed games and stories because they were common in European mythology; even the wargs used in the Hobbit were based on the wargs mentioned in the epic of Beowulf. So while there will be similarities in cultures and such, don't rely too heavily on the history and mechanics from any of these sources.
✦Is there an age requirement for playing?
The forum I would generally rate as being PG-13, and as such, would like members to be at least 13.
✦Why can't I be a shapeshifting Druid or rune mage?
Because this isn't D&D, Mage here is a broad term simply meaning you are a magic user, of which there are 5 distinct classes. Basically I wanted to keep it as simple as possible so that people who are less familiar with fantasy settings vould have just as much fun as those who are.
✦Can I be a fighter/rogue/thief/other non-mage class?
For the most part, go for it. I review all apps, and much like FedEx, if it fits it ships. Adventurers and non-mages are highly encouraged because what would the world be without them? Generally as long as it fits in the theme of the world, it should be fine and if you're not sure just ask me. :3
✦Can I be a dire rat/troll/giant/dragon/other mythological creature/were-creature?
This gets approved on a case by case basis. Again, this is not D&D or Skyrim, so being a half dragon or half troll and such gets a no unless we discuss it first. Generally only the intelligent species are playable, but if you want to play one that isn't or isn't listed talk to me and we'll figure it out.
✦Why do Mage classes only get three spells?
In an effort to keep level grinding to be top dog from being a player priority, I've limited the starting spells to keep it in check. While all mages may know a variety of spells within their specialization, they can have up to three main spells. Magic is something that takes years to practice, hone, and master, and limiting it helps keep it fair.
✦How does that keep it fair?
Games using points and level systems can be good, but they can also be abused and cause player animosity. Suppose it only takes 100 points to go from level 1 to level 2, and then you'd automatically get new spells. Johnny is in fewer threads, but his posts are longer and threads more geared toward character development and mention IC his character's efforts to learn new magic. Eventually he gets to 100 points and gets new spells. Happy Johnny. Frank is in lots of threads all at once, his posts only meet the word minimum, and mostly consist of his character walking around or talking. While there could be some character development eventually, Frank only wants to rack up points to level up. Very quickly Frank gets to 100 points and automatically gets to the next level and gains new spells without really putting in the effort. I've seen this be the case time and time again in many different RP forums, so I am eliminating this issue from the start.
Three main spells should be enough for most mages to get by and take care of themselves. You can change the usable spells in your roster if you don't use some of them as often as others, and you don't even need three to start; just up to three. Additional spells are approved on a case by case basis, and there will need to be IC demonstrations of putting effort into learning new magic.
✦How does alchemy work here?
It works the same way chemistry does. Scientific understanding is limited, but all alchemy is based in science and cannot exceed the realms of what can be made in a basic chem lab. Alchemist characters CANNOT cross over to tap the Ley Lines and use magic, however chemistry often looks like magic to those not in the know. Alchemist characters can list up to three special alchemical skills their character has studied and specialized in, such as creating acid, ye olde glowsticks, creating black powder, etc. If you need ideas, look up information on experiments done in high school chemistry, or online sources about ancient alchemy.
✦Are there other continents/kingdoms on Dav'Ris?
For now, no. While there are legends of a world beyond Dav'Ris far to the north, expeditions have never returned. If eventually there are enough players I may make new lands, but for now there's quite a lot of places to adventure to.
✦I have an idea for a quest! What do I do?
If you come up with a fun idea for a quest to rally the players, congrats! Take your idea and post it in the member forum marked Quests, in the subforum marked Quest Ideas. Here you can pitch your idea, get feedback from players, and refine it. Big or small, post them all here. They'll be briefly reviewed, and once approved moved to sign-ups so that members interested can join you on your quest to fill whatever roles are needed. When it starts, it'll be moved to Current Quests, where everyone can post.
All players are encouraged to offer quest ideas. ♥
✦How many characters may I have?
As many as your available time can realistically keep up with. You start off with one character, and after 20 IC posts, you may apply for another. After 20 posts on that account, you can app for another, etc. etc. However, in order to keep those characters, it's encouraged that you post with each of them at least once every other week.
✦Do I have to register each character?
Yes. Each will need its own email address for ProBoards, and once the account is made you should change your account name to match your character's (once they have one).
✦My character has amnesia or is mysterious with nothing known about them.
Mysterious people happen in fairy tales, and amnesiacs do occur. However, just because they don't remember their past or nobody around them knows about them doesn't mean their profile gets to skip those sections. Tell us who they are and what they're like, and what makes them tick, even if nobody else knows for whatever reason.
✦Can I make a guild?
I'm holding off on making subgroups like guilds until there's enough people.
✦Can my character die in a thread?
Death is the leading killer and happens to the best of us. That said, yes, your character can die in threads, however, this can't happen without your permission. Since there is no powergaming, there's no auto-killing. But if you WANT your character to die, you're more than welcome to have that happen in a thread. Plus, good deaths make for great stories!
✦This character's not working out for me. Can I get a new one?
Yup! If your character just isn't working the way you want them to or they just don't like the world they're in, let staff know and your app can either be deleted, or moved to pending where you can edit it and replace it with the new app and information so you don't need to make another account. Just be sure to change your user name to match.
✦Can I advertise another forum I'm at?
Sure! But in return, you have to advertise us on that forum so it's an even swap. You never know who might join, and the more the merrier!
✦Your forum is really, really plain. I hate it.
*shrug* Sorry. I picked ProBoards because I understood the admin panel easier and I wasn't drowning under coding. I don't like heavy coding, scrolling widgets, and flashy doodads because not all of us are blessed with new computers or good internet speeds. Pretty wrapping's nice, but it eats bandwidth. I'll dress the site up as we go, but don't expect it to do tricks. Honestly, I'd rather the content speak for itself despite the simplicity. :3
✦Can I be staff?
We all need help sometimes, so sometimes I will need staff. If I feel you're a good fit and can make a difference, we'll talk. ♥
✦You mentioned this world is like a fairy tale world?
Yup. As if the inclusion of fairies, elves, unicorns, and trolls weren't enough of a giveaway, this is a world where fairy tales are part of life. People can be enchanted, be put under sleep curses with true love cures, or marry a big bad wolf.
✦How do I know what IC threads I can post in?
Until I figure out how to make a sub header for new threads, your thread title should have the title of the thread, if it's open or not, and who is or will be playing in it. If you start the thread and mark it as open, that means anyone can join. (example, My Adventure! (Open) ) If an active thread is marked as closed, that means you can't join unless you're invited to it.
✦What kind of calendar does this world have?
For simplicity's sake, the months and calendar wheel here will be the same as ours; twelve months with four seasons. Holidays will be different due to cultural differences, but the Equinoxes for the seasons will be the same. There have been three ages of the world, Dav'Ris currently in the year 850 of the Third Age. Each age lasted approximately 10,000 years, following planetary alignments to mark them.
✦Given the races you have, may I be a half--?
Half-breeds of races to occur and they can add a lot to a story. As long as it's not half dragon or half Fae or some such, it should be fine. If you're not sure, just ask and we'll talk about it. If you aren't sure about the lifespan or genetic perks of being half of something, please feel free to ask. :3
